College Fellows FAQ

Q: What is the College Fellows Program?

A: The College Fellows Program is designed to empower college-ready youth and help them develop their skills through a curriculum focused on problem-solving and critical thinking. Our goal is to prepare youth to face the academic, social, and life challenges of college transition while empowering them in an environment that fosters learning and self-determination.

 

Q: What does the program cost?

The program is free to attend.

 

Q: Is financial assistance provided?

The leadership program offers some modest financial support to remove small, yet significant, barriers to success for individual Fellows.

 

Q: Are work responsibilities involved?

No. The College Fellowship is a leadership program to supplement academic and personal development goals. It is not a working fellowship or an internship.

 

Q: What is the program commitment?

Fellows agree to attend group sessions once a month from January to May, and separate individual coaching sessions each month. The group sessions are held every 2nd Friday and run from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Participants will be introduced to community and business leaders, and participate in topical discussions that complement their academic and life goals. Download a copy of the schedule.

 

Q: What are the requirements to participate in the program?

Applicants must have applied to, or plan to enroll in, an accredited college or university and be able to participate in sessions in Virginia, Maryland or the District of Columbia, and must have a minimum grade point average of 2.500. In addition, at least two (2) recommendations and a high school or college transcript must be included with the program application. 

 

Q: Can I participate in the program if I attend a community college?

Yes, students from Northern Virginia Community College, Montgomery College, UDC Community College and other area community colleges are welcome to apply.

The application takes between 20-30 minutes to fill out. The application with one-page essay, recommendations and transcript can be submitted online or through the mail. Applicants' references may submit letters of recommendation online .
